e adivinha, acabou,
e trazido de volta para meu estado padrão,
e minha identidade/status padrão
/o que acho que mereço na vida,
e isso é algo que quero que você perceba agora,
você pode ter todas as suas desculpas, 'não estou lá por causa'
disso, perdi meu dinheiro por causa disso, não sou'
confiante por causa disso, muito fácil pensar que é uma vítima,
das circunstâncias, você não tem oportunidades, as pessoas te fodem,
mas se quer saber a verdade, você tem muitas oportunidades,
e uma pessoa que realmente te fode, seu opressor número 1,
é você,
por que? Porque estamos todos viciados,
e essa é a coisa mais viciante do mundo,
estamos todos viciados em nosso estado padrão,
e nossa identidade padrão,
essa merda é mais viciante que craque, cocaína,
e não importa o que faça externamente, não importa o que
você muda e quanto sucesso você tenta obter,
você encontrará um caminho,
e pode ser óbvio, muito sutil,
para voltar para esse estado, por alguns momentos simplesmente,
estejam com nós mesmos,
então,
respire fundo e
esteja lá, como é ser você?
o que está acontecendo? O que é
essa experiência que está tendo agora mesmo de ser você,
e traga alguma consciência para as sensações diferentes, se há qualquer
tensão, qualquer
incômodos, você está desconfortável, há
uma nó no seu estômago, se está tenso,
sua linguagem corporal está tensa, se sua cara
está tensa ou se está à vontade,
comece a fazer uma lista, o que está acontecendo,
e quero ver isso objetivamente,
e para fazer isso, imagine alguém mais, outro além de você, é
magicamente transportado para o seu corpo,
e está experimentando o que você está experimentando agora,
como seria a experiência dessa pessoa sobre você?
O que essa pessoa avaliaria, digamos numa escala de 1 a 10,
essa experiência de você,
seria uma experiência agradável? "Ah, isso foi",
"foi divertido, foi agradável", ou
"Puta merda, sou muito feliz por não ser essa pessoa",
me tire daqui, me tire desse corpo,
o que seria, e só por diversão, avalie,
imagine essa pessoa experimentando você, avalie isso objetivamente,
em uma escala de 1 a 10,
faça isso mais uma vez,
e abra seus olhos agora, e
me responda, me responda virtualmente,
essa é a resposta real,
essa é a resposta honesta, não é
a resposta que você dá por força do hábito mentalmente,
isso é como realmente é ser você,
é por isso que as pessoas vencem a loteria e perdem,
e ninguém resolve, você está, "bem, estou gastando por um bom motivo",
você tem todas as desculpas e racionalizações, e você
continua sendo puxado de volta,
e você pode se perguntar também, e ser honesto,
debaixo de tudo, abaixo desse sucesso temporário superficial,
alguma coisa mudou de verdade por dentro,
e além disso, não seja, "ah, claro, sou confiante mesmo",
onde ainda há uma voz, 'mentira',
você sabe que é superficial,
no fundo seu estado mudou?
Sente alguma diferença? Talvez o externo mudou um pouco,
apesar disso, mas dentro, há algo diferente de verdade?
Tem alguma coisa transformada realmente?
E se você é igual a mim, como eu era, a resposta é não, eu tinha tudo,
eu tinha o dinheiro, as garotas, as viagens, o status, o sucesso, tudo,
e debaixo de tudo isso, eu não poderia aproveitar,
eu continuava tendo que lutar,
perdendo isso, essa é a linha base, isso é você,
então há sua personalidade,
o que a maioria fazem é tentar conseguir as coisas externas, fama,
dinheiro, garotas,
sucesso, saúde,
etc, viajar, etc, etc,
isso não funciona só na superfície,
então você está, "bem, vamos ajustar esse",
"minha personalidade aqui, confiança",
indo nisso, positividade,
vamos fazer um desafio positivo, foco positivo,
vamos sair e, não sei, adicionar
força de vontade e agitação, etc, etc,
mas ainda é superficial, se você tirar toda essa merda,
você ainda… Para mim,
3 de 10, isso é algo que mais e mais pessoas estão percebendo, a propósito,
toda a internet, tecnologia,
há mais oportunidades onde você começa a ter sucesso,
e isso é enorme focar agora também, é
ter sucesso, ter sucesso, conseguir, conseguir, você ainda não aproveita,
está viciado nisso,
quando passei por aquele escândalo,
tudo foi tirado, e isso,
é a experiência mais traumática, horrível que eu já passei,
mas foi a experiência que tirou tudo isso e me forçou,
a confrontar esse estado padrão, essa linha de base,
confrontar o que está dentro, e perceber,
tenho que chegar ao núcleo aqui, tenho que chegar a causa,
tem a ver com o trabalho profundo,
por que? Porque o interno afeta o externo,
essa experiência interna de você, é o que colore
seu externo, e é sobre isso que transformação tem a ver,
tem a ver com chegar a causa,
mudando essa linha de base, mudando seu estado padrão,
sua identidade padrão, o que você acha que merece da vida,
então você para de lutar contra si mesmo,
então você para de ser puxado para trás, pelo contrário,
você começa a ser puxado no sentido de seus objetivos, o que você quer,
e essa coisas se tornam muito mais fáceis,
você está descendo essa pista, dirigindo com os freios apertados,
mude isso então você pode começar a aproveitar,
seu sucesso, e você começa a ser puxado para mais,
e esse é um programa que tem a ver verdadeiramente com resultados, não é só
mude a maldita engrenagem interna, é mudar o interno e começa a prosperar,
vamos te tirar do enfrentamento e vamos fazer você prosperar,
é sobre isso que esse programa tem a ver, é isso que mudou minha vida,
sendo completamente modesto, olhe para mim,
tenho feito isso por 10 anos, trabalhando em mim por 10 anos,
mais de 10 anos, faço isso desde 2006,
se olhar para os primeiros 8 anos VS os últimos 2,
desde essa mudança na vida passando pelo escândalo na mídia,
esses últimos 2 anos mudando, transformando,
tiveram muito menos esforço do que os primeiros 8, e muito mais drásticos,
eles superaram esses primeiros 8 anos por um tiro no escuro,
e é isso que quero para você, é por isso que criei isso,
para te dar essa mudança fácil, onde você arrasa na vida,
chega desse 'lutando contra si mesmo',
meio que essa batalha difícil, esquece isso, já basta,
e provável que você tem sucesso suficiente, percebeu que funciona mas nada
muda esse núcleo,
nada muda lá dentro, e você continua tendo que
lutar contra si mesmo, já basta, esqueça a auto-sabotagem, sem mais
auto-sabotagem, e o que eu criei aqui foi um programa que
chega a esse núcleo, perfura a mentira,
nada desse trabalho superficial, nada dessa
masturbação mental de reorganizar o externo,
esquece isso, vamos chegar até a causa,

– [Robert] Hello, hello, hello.
This is Robert Kiyosaki of The Rich Dad Radio Show,
the good news and bad news about money.
Our guest today is Mark Manson,
he's a best selling author, blogger
and internet entrepreneur.
And he's a best selling author of the book,
I love the title, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a "F".
I usually say that word a lot but Kim is sitting here
so I'm not allowed to say it. (Kim laughing)
A counterintuitive approach to living a good life,
which came out in 2016 and his more recent book is
Everything is F'd, a book about hope.
I don't know if you guys know this
but I sit there and I see a lot of nowhere
men and women everywhere.
Maybe it's a reflection of me
seeing my reflection in the mirror.
But I met so many people whose lives are f'd,
and so today, if you're one of these people whose,
f'd up in life, this is your program for you.
And we have a fantastic author whose gonna talk to you
on how to get un-f'd.
What do you think Kim?
(Kim laughing)
– [Kim] I'm excited, I'm excited,
because I want to start with,
The Subtle Art of Not Giving an F,
but you know as you talk about, there is a lot of fake.
Robert your coming out with your new book Fake,
I think there is a lot of fake
and we were talking before we started the show about
all the people that go on Instagram and Facebook
and they say, oh look at all the thousands
of friends I have, I have all these friends
and they don't have friends. (laughing)
They don't even know who these people are
but they've made this stuff up in their mind
that there's this delusion.
People I think are delusional.
So we are going to figure out how to
get passed the delusion with Mark Manson.
So, Mark.
– [Robert] So Mark, you can use the "F" word
'cause I'm – [Kim] You can say
whatever you want. (laughing)
Welcome to the show Mark.
– [Robert] What's your motivation for writing
these f'd up books (laughing)?
Or books for f'd up people?
– [Mark] Yeah, right?
It's basically, I grew up reading a lot of
self help and a lot of it,
there were a lot of great messages about positive thinking,
goal setting and things like that.
But by the time I got into my 30's
I think I got caught in a lot of those traps,
a lot of that fake ness you guys where saying.
And I figured that we need to have as a culture,
we needed to have a very difficult discussion
about what we value and what we are choosing to
make important in our lives.
So I wanted to write self help books around that
but since nobody will buy a book about values,
you know I had to put the f word.
(Kim laughing)
– [Robert] That's very smart marketing I think, you know?
Everybody's got their handle and yours is f'd (laughing).
That's pretty good.
You now control that territory.
So why do you think people,
lets go into, The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F,
a counterintuitive approach to living a good life,
what is your message to people listening right now
who think their lives are kind of f'd up?
– [Kim] And are you saying don't care?
The Subtle Art of Not Caring?
Or what's the message?
– [Mark] So the message is basically
you have to care about something.
There is no such thing as not and I think
we all wish in our fantasies we wish
that we had a very carefree life and
that nothing bothered us but
the truth of the matter is, there's always gonna be
issues in life, there's always gonna be problems.
And essentially we need to focus on
choosing better problems for ourselves.
(Robert chuckling)
Instead of running away from our problems
we need to like – [Robert] Choose better
problems, yeah that's good.
– [Mark] Choose problems that benefit our lives.
– [Kim] Versus just doing all this stuff
that's not important, that doesn't have any meaning,
just posting all your pictures on Instagram
and worrying about all these little things,
are you saying you need to take on bigger, bigger tasks?
– [Mark] Yeah, I essentially the argument that I make
is that if you are really unhappy with your life
it's not because you have problems,
it's because you have bad problems.
You have problems that are not adding meaning
and purpose to your life.
A good life is a life of good problems,
one of the things I even say in the book is that,
you know people with out money suffer
because they don't have money, people with money
suffer because they have money.
The suffering is always there it's just that
one set of problems is much more desirable
than another set of problems.
– [Robert] I was just in Las Vegas at a Tony Robbins seminar
and he's got them all revved up,
it's like 5000 of them and they're all
jumping up and down and screaming and yelling
and having a good time.
What do you think of all that?
– [Mark] I'm not a huge subscriber to that
(Mark and Robert laughing)
I think Tony does great stuff.
I think there is a lot of good advice but one of the things,
I'm a much more pessimistic person.
I think humans by nature are, we're really flawed,
selfish creatures, we're very irrational, short sighted.
And so for a while, it often feels very good
to get in a room and jump up and down
and say you can do anything and you can
accomplish your dreams and all this stuff.
You know that feels nice but
at the end of the day if you have bad dreams
then being able to accomplish them is not a good thing.
So I just take a much more pessimistic
and cynical view towards our own minds
and our own happiness.
– [Robert] Well just f. – [Mark] And I try,
go ahead.
– [Robert] Oh, f.y.i, when Tony first came out,
Kim and I were living in La Jolla, California
and he came out and he was the hottest guy
and he was our partner for a while
and then we parted ways.
You know because he has good stuff
and I learned a lot from him but
I tend to agree with you.
I think that one of the reasons people are not
successful is because, I don't think
they are handling what they need to handle,
first of all in life.
– [Mark] Uh hmm.
– [Robert] And like you have money problems
that's your next opportunity, can you handle that problem
or not, jumping up and down and hi-fiving
and feeling good is not gonna handle it.
I mean that's kind of what happened for Kim and myself
and we went our separate ways.
Kim and I learned a lot from him.
– [Kim] Oh, we learned a whole lot
and he's a great teacher and
he does a lot of great things for a lot of people.
It's just a different style definitely.
So let me ask you Mark, 'cause you talk a lot
about values and so, values lead to meaning.
Do you think with technology and internet
and Instagram and Facebook and everybody's
so busy on all these devices,
do they even know what their values are?
– [Mark] I think a lot of us don't.
I think it's a very difficult process
because I think we all think we do.
You know if you ask somebody, what's most important
in your life, you know they'll say like,
my family, – [Kim] Yup, yup.
– [Mark] my friends and blah blah blah,
but if you look at their behaviors,
you look at their actions, you look at their track record,
most of us are not living up to the values
that we aspire to.
– [Kim] Yeah.
– [Mark] I think,
– [Robert] So let me ask you this question,
lets say somebody is a nowhere man or
a nowhere woman, sitting here in bad marriage
or bad job or not making enough money
or under mountains of debt or student loan debt
and all of this, and you are kind of anti-
the self help movement, where positive thinking stuff.
Is that what I understand?
– [Mark] Yeah, I describe myself as like a
self help for people who hate self help.
(laughing)
– [Kim] Yep, yep.
– [Robert] That's pretty good.
– [Kim] So if I can get back to values for one second
because when Robert and I,
early on in our relationship, we did this little process
and it was a great process for anybody
whose going into partnership.
So what we did is we took a three by five card
and I wrote down my top ten values
and I flipped it over and I wrote
what I thought was Roberts top ten values were
and he did the same and then we discussed it.
And when you say it's a process,
so I few years ago I went back to that list
and my girlfriends and I went through and
kind of redefined some of our values and it was a process.
It took a few months actually,
to get crystal clear on what it is I stood for,
what's important to me, what's most meaningful to me,
it is a process.
And why do you think people don't want to look?
Why don't they look?
– [Mark] It's painful.
It's difficult because you have to be honest
about your own failure and I think it's just
much easier to distract yourself with
simple pleasures and you know it's a dopamine,
– [Kim] Yeah.
– [Mark] From the internet and everything.
– [Kim] Robert's very proud of his failures.
(laughing)
We'd learn from them, we'd discuss them,
we'd put in lights (laughing).
– [Mark] You got to be, you got to be.
It's the only way you learn.
– [Robert] Are you one of these people, no pain no gain?
– [Mark] Yeah, I think that's kind of
a simplified way to look at it.
– [Robert] We're a simple show here that's
why do it (chuckling).
– [Mark] (laughing) I guess my argument would be
no pain no gain but also just no pain no luck.
(laughing) Even if your not gaining you're
going to have pain so you might as well gain.
– [Robert] Right, I agree.
There's pain anywhere.
– [Kim] So what – [Mark] Exactly.
– [Kim] role does pain play in success?
– [Mark] I think it's necessary,
I think success is a product of who is able to
face and deal with their pain the best.
I think the more we avoid our pain
the more fragile we become
or more short sided.
– [Kim] Yeah I got an example,
I was just at the gym yesterday and
there's this guy and he's about 350 pounds
and he want to lose weight and to get fit
but he shows up once every two weeks (laughing).
– [Robert] Are you talking about me?
(laughing)
– [Kim] And he has excuses of why he can't do it
so he's not willing to face that pain,
he's not willing to go through it.
– [Mark] Yeah.
And it's the same is true in business
and the same is true in money,
it's painful, it shocks to put away 20 percent
of your paycheck every month.
That's not fun but that is, you know,
it gives you a stable financial life.
It's true in business, it's true in everything.
– [Robert] One of the things I just read this morning
is that, it's what you react to is how big you are.
Now if you get upset that somebody's not doing something
that's very petty and I think a lot of time
people are in pain over little petty things
that get in the way of the big picture
of their life and things like that,
so what is the art of not giving a f?
– [Mark] Well I joke with people,
everybody focuses on the f word in the title
but I always tell people the most important word is subtle
because ultimately all these questions about
values, what you're choosing to care about,
what you're choosing to focus your time and energy on,
these are actually very subtle questions.
Our mind plays tricks on us,
we're always looking for ways to avoid a difficult question
and it ultimately requires a consistent
skepticism of our own thoughts and feelings
to stay aligned with where we ultimately
what's good for us.
– [Robert] When we come back on, I'm ask if you can
give me an example of a nowhere man or a nowhere woman
to be politically correct here.
– [Mark} Sure.
– [Robert] I was just reading this, because
I do a lot of self help stuff, I mean I like it
but I'm willing to go through, being a former Marine,
I am a Marine,
– [Kim] But you go through the pain.
– [Robert] I go through the pain
– [Kim] You do your meditation every morning.
– [Robert] I loooovvve pain
– [Kim] Yup, we do the reading, we do the studying.
– [Robert] And I go to the gym and I hate it, you know?
(laughing)
I hate writing books and I hate dealing with idiots
and all that stuff but it's part of the process
of growing so I'm kind of a,
you don't join the Marine Corp because
you are a wimp, if you know what I mean,
I knew I joined them because it was going to be painful
that was the main reason.
So, it's kind of refreshing to hear somebody like you
especially of your generation and your age
saying the same thing.
'Cause I'm so sick and tired of everybody gets a trophy
and don't say anything that hurts somebody's feelings
and all this and I'm going, heck
my feeling are hurt, I don't like it but it's some of
the best feedback I can get at that moment in time.

about a real person or an example of a
male or female, they're not looking in the mirror,
they are not going through the pain.

how come there is no financial education in school
but why isn't the education on taxes either?
They tell you to save money which is stupid.

– [Tom] '86 was the last one, back when
I was in Washington, D.C..

especially if your tending to the nowhere man status.
Your wondering why is my life, f'd?
Any comments Kim?
– [Kim] Well I think this is a really perfect subject
right now because if you look at what's going on
with social media and the media and everybody's
so engaged in all these devices, that
they are not taking the time to really focus on
what's important to them.
What their values are.
And that's what Mark's talking about so,
– [Robert] So can I add one more thing,
what we're talking about values but
the other thing I found out that makes a person successful
is a thing called priorities.
You know, can you get your priorities in line?
And as we're saying, like, Kim and I years and years ago
said let's make it a goal to retire young.
So I have a book out called Retire Young Retire Rich,
and all this just so we can get on with our lives.
And now I just turned 72 in April
and I see people who haven't even started
to think about retirement.
They got jack, they got nothing.
Then I see younger people who are in
their 40's and 50's, their still not thinking,
it's still not a priority.
And this one thing that I think we all know
setting up for retirement takes time and money
– [Kim] And effort and as Mark says,
struggle and pain, you got to go through it to get there.
[Robert] And so they're out there having a good time
but their priorities, ooohhh,
I have an extra hundred bucks,
you know I could do something,
I think I'll go to Las Vegas with it
and their priorities are f'd.
Any comments on that Mark?
– [Mark] Yeah, so a lot.
(laughing)
– [Robert] We got 20 minutes you can do it then.
– [Mark] So I think one of the biggest issues
is that we tend to prioritize based on our feelings.
So, planning for retirement it's anxiety inducing,
it can be depressing, it's not fun.
And our mind is always biased towards
prioritizing what feels good and I think it's
we have to constantly counter act that within ourselves.
And I think there used to be a lot of cultural
institutions and traditions of like helping people
to push against indulging their own emotions.
And I think what a lot of has changed today
is that those restraints are being removed.
So the cultural today is, if it feels good go for it.
– [Robert] Yeah, but also I have read
that people have lost their resilience,
you know if you say somebody hurts their feelings
you know they attack you on social media.
And so you can't the pain is now,
well you said something that offended me.
Their pain tolerance is so low but worst of all
they take that pain, they attack everybody else.
I'm not on social media, well I am,
but I don't pay it much attention to it.
They go out there and they attack
anybody who hurts their feelings.
– [Mark] Yeah, I get it all the time.
I actually, I just made, I sent an email out
and I have the f word in my book title
so obviously I have a pretty crass sense of humor,
so I made a joke about.
– [Robert] It offends me, it offends me Mark.
(Kim laughing)
Geez. (Robert laughing)
– [Mark] I made a joke about a stripper
in my email and I got like, 40 emails
of people telling me I'm immoral
and I'm disgusting and they can't believe
I would say something like that.
I'm like, what world are we living in?
Can everybody relax for a second.
– [Robert] And the other day we had this women
who wrote a book on the economists walks into a brothel
and I told them the story,
– [Mark] Oh yeah.
– [Robert] I told them the story of how
I was sitting in this Cat House in Costa Rica
talking to Kim and the emails flew.
(Mark laughing)
What the hell are you doing in a Cat House?
I said, well kind of looking around.
I don't fool around, I like to go and look
and oh man, it's like their moral standards,
I thought I was talking to the Pope or something.
– [Kim] And to that point, to that point,
I think this goes right into what your saying is
people are focusing on all these little bitty
tiny things that really don't matter.
Instead of looking at something that is important
in their life or meaningful in their life
that really matters and they should get on with that
and quit messing around with all the other crap.
– [Robert] So let me ask you this Mark,
this will give you chance to pump your book again,
this, Everything is F'd and the Subtle Art Of Not Giving a,
what is the benefit for all the people listening right now?
Why should they read your book?
Especially if, their values are messed up,
their priorities are out of sink and they're f'd,
why should they read your book?
– [Mark] I think right now we're living in a
culture of instant gratification and
I think it's affecting everybody.
I'm a younger guy, it probably affects my generation
a bit more but I think it's affecting everybody.
We are putting too much emphasis on immediately feeling good
and distracting ourselves to feel good.
Basically my whole career is writing self help
and personal development books
that help people confront painful realities
that they need to confront and we need
more of that in our culture.
– [Robert] So what's different about your book,
I mean it's different that you say,
basically saying almost no pain, no gain,
which I agree with because I like pain.
Because when I get through the pain
I've gone through another level of life.
I was like I hate going to the gym but
when I'm through I'm happy but most
don't ever go to the gym and they get unhappier.
That's a real subtle (cross talking)
– [Mark] Yeah.
My first point would just be that
you're going to have pain no matter what,
we might as well gain from it.
There's no avoiding the pain,
there's always going to be pain.
So you might as well pick good pain
but the other thing that I do, that I think
is very different than other people in the industry
is that I come from a starting point,
I have a very pessimistic view of human nature.
I think we are just very irrational and flawed creatures
and we need to except that so we can counteract it.
– [Robert] You think they're f'd (chuckling).
– [Mark] Well you're fully f'd.
(laughing)
We've always been f'd, we've been f'd since the beginning
of time and we're going to be f'd forever.
– [Robert] So would you recommend that
someone give this book to their brother in law
whose f'd?
(laughing)
– [Kim] And here's what I understand in Everything is F'd,
is that people, you say you know we have technologies,
people are healthier living longer,
economy is supposedly good, people are wealthier,
yeah everybody's f'd and their angry and their not happy
and they take offense at the littlest thing.
What the heck, what's going on?
– [Mark] Yeah, we live in a very strange time
in that the world materially is the best it's ever been,
yet there's tons of data out there showing
that people are more depressed, anxious angry, upset,
then in generations.
The book looks at what is it about our current
technology or current culture that is enabling people to,
essentially it's just bringing out the worse
in ourselves emotionally and causing
all this conflict all the time.
– [Robert] Well you must have hit a nerve
because you're an international best seller
and a lot of people would agree with you that,
how can I be so unhappy when I have everything?
– [Mark] Well part of the problem,
one of the first points I make in the book is that,
is the better things get, it took so much of us
feeling good and stable and healthy,
is having something to look forward to.
And so when we're sitting
in an air conditioned room, got a nice big t.v.,
we have like mocha frappuccino's delivered to our door
with a click of a button.
– [Robert] Oh, that sounds good.
– [Mark] It's hard to know what to hope for, what to pursue.
And so that actually creates this,
this discomfort malaise within people.
They feel like they have to invent problems
where there are none in order to feel like
they are accomplishing something.
– [Kim] And does it come down to the main point
of they just don't have that meaning in their life?
They don't know what's most important to them.
So they're looking outside of themselves.
– [Mark] Yes, when you flood people with information
all day every day, it's more difficult to know
what's important than before.
– [Robert] Another thing you'll say is
feeling high is not being happy.
– [Mark] Yes.
– [Robert] Is that why the drug epidemic is so rampant now?
– [Mark] I think you're seeing on a lot of fronts,
I think social media addiction,
there's people talking about porn addiction now,
– [Robert] What's wrong with that?
– [Mark] and then you have the opioid epidemic (laughing).
– [Kim] So they are looking for that
adrenaline rush all the time?
– [Robert] Well of course (chuckling).
– [Mark] Yeah and it's,
one of the things I talk about is there is a difference
between happiness and highs and I think our culture is
started to confuse highs for happiness.
(cross talking)
There easy to market, there easy to sell to people.
– [Robert] So if everybody reads, Everything is F'd
and The Subtle Art of Not Giving an F,
you'll explain the differences between happiness and highs?
– [Mark] Yes.
– [Robert] Well that's a good reason to read your book.
– [Kim] There it is, but I do want to know
what is your definition of happiness?
– [Mark] Happiness is having something
meaningful that you're pursuing day to day.
And the thing about happiness is,
it's not always pleasant.
If you think about somebody raising a kid
or building a business, it's a very stressful uncomfortable
thing but it's also what makes you happiest
and most proud of in your life.
– [Kim] Yeah, 'cause we talk about if
you're building a business you got to find that purpose
for your business and a purpose within yourself.
Otherwise you're going to quit when it gets hard
and I see a lot of people quit really quickly
because it gets to hard, they have a set back
they can't handle it.
– [Mark] 'Cause they're in it for the highs.
– [Kim] Yeah.
– [Robert] And the ego.
– [Mark] They're in it for the money.
– [Robert] The ego.
– [Mark] Yeah. – [Kim] And they're in it
for the money, yup.
– [Robert] So you know Mark,
I congratulate you on your success,
I'm glad you now control the f word, not me.
(Mark laughing)
You have no idea, Mark.
– [Mark] You're passing the torch Rob.
(laughing)
– [Kim] I'm happy to have him pass that torch.
– [Robert] I went to a military school
and then six years Marine Corp,
and if somebody wasn't cursing me out
that meant that they didn't love me.
You know what I mean?
And then I come out into society and
it's like, huh you hurt my feelings.
I said that hurts your feelings?
Yeah, give me a break.
– [Mark] Yeah.
– [Robert] Anyway, so I thank you for
writing your books and giving a f, for people.
I think it's timely, I think it's important.
And you know like the old, it's time to man up
or woman up or something, you know, get more resilience.
I've never met such wimpy people all my life.
And I think it's,
– [Mark] Yeah, we really need to introduce some more grit
and resilience into the culture for sure.
– [Robert] Amen brother, amen, amen.
So once again, it's Mark Manson, he's
not related to the other guy are you?
(laughing) Excuse me.
– [Mark] That's another podcast.
(laughing)
– [Robert] But anyway, I congratulate to all your success
for giving an f, and wanting to get people
to stand their ground basically because
there is too much going the other way.
Oh, you hurt my feelings and you said something
that will offend me.
And it's a point I don't want to say or do anything anymore,
does that make sense to you?
– [Mark] Yeah, absolutely, I feel it too.
It is tiring. – [Robert] Yeah.
What the hell are we doing is my question?
– [Mark] It's like, why are we responsible
for other peoples feelings?
It's not my fault you're upset about something.
– [Robert] Yeah.
And you know that (stammering),
I mean I liked the Civil War because I was a student of it
but now they're tearing down all these statues and all this,
it's not gonna change the war.
(laughing)
It was a time in history but everybody's tearing down
our past trying to re-write the future
and that's gonna screw up our future.
– [Mark] Yeah.
– [Robert] We don't learn the lessons from the past.
– [Mark] It's a weird time to be sure
and my new book is my attempt to kind of make sense of it.
– [Robert] Yeah. – [Kim] And it's called
everything is f'd, a book about hope
and it's just out now.
– [Robert] So Mark thank you for writing a book

a time to be calmer more peaceful non-reactionary.

– [Kim] Well I thought it was a great show
and really when he talked about
people prioritize things and they base their values
on what feels good in the moment
and I think that's part of the big problem.
And not having that meaning or finding out
what's most important to you and operating
on really what your core values are
versus posting a picture on Instagram
and hanging out with all your friends,
your thousands of friends who really aren't your friends.
I mean they kind of created a fake world for themselves,
so I feel this was like a get back to basics
and really get back to work.

what you guys are thinking.
What's the first question Melissa?
– [Melissa] Our first question today
comes from Anna, from the Bronx, New York.
Favorite book, Rich Dad Poor Dad.
She says, I'm involved with the network marketing industry,
and I really love the concept and want to always keep
doing whatever I can to get out of the rat race.
Sometimes, however, I get discouraged because
so many people want success and money
but are not willing to do what others do.
How do you suggest handling these people,
meaning the others that don't want to do the work
but only want the rewards?
– [Robert] Fantastic question and congratulations
for being in that industry because
it's not about handling the other people,
it's really about handling yourself.
And if you can do that and keep going,
no matter what happens, like Kim and I
was just studying the core of the eagle, Eckhart Tolle.
It says if you can not react to it,
you can just be calm to it,
and I think that's the most important thing.
Like as a Marine and pilot, when things got really bad
we think and get really calm.
Because if you reacted, you went nuts,
I mean you were not functioning.
Any comments on that?
– [Kim] It's interesting that Anna talks about
network marketing because I was recently at
a large network marketing conference
and almost every speaker, there was two messages.
One was, the more people I serve,
the more effective I become and the second one was
how do you serve more people?
How do you, basically work your butt off
to get what you want and I spoke with many women
who where at those tope levels of their company
and these women work like crazy around the clock.
There was no shortcuts, it's exactly what
Mark Manson is talking about in terms of
you got to get out there and you got to feel that pain
and you got to go through the struggle.
They're going through it and they're having huge rewards
but it is them taking the initiative as you said Robert.
– [Robert] But you got to learn to control yourself
that is what Eckhart Tolle's about and all this.
The reason I say congratulations is
most of my friends are very tough people, men.
You know they are Marines or they're Mormon missionaries
and they are in network marketing.
And what happens for most people,
they choose the easier route.
You know, how much money can I make?
Can I just sit there at TSA and
let people go pass and get a paycheck?
But the people who are the most successful
have learned to deal with themselves.
So we have Tom Wheelwright, our CPA,
he's author of the book Tax Free Wealth,
he was a Mormon missionary in France.
He worked one whole year (stammering)
to convert one or two people only.
Everyday taking no, taking no, taking no.
And my best friend Larry, he was in Northern Ireland,
he has the highest conversion rate of
Catholics to Mormonism.
And he's so extremely successful because
they learned to deal with themselves.
If you can not, that's what author Mark is talking about,
if you let other people affect your life,
The Subtle Art of Not Giving an F, you're not gonna make it.
Too many people are more worried about
what other people think of them then
learning to control the internal reactions within yourself.
I was just reading Tolle this morning,
he says you are the size of your upset.
So like, if somebody didn't deliver
your paper in the morning and your upset,
that's how big you are.
So people let little tiny things affect them.
The longer you stay in that network marketing business
and taking those rejections but learn,
not get tougher but learn to deal with yourself
the better off you'll be.
– [Kim] And I think to, you hit it on the head
when you say, people are looking for the easy way.
They are looking for the easy thing and
even this came up in the conference I was just at
that they say, well everybody's looking to find
that big fish.
You know this person who has all these connections
instead of just doing the hard work every single day.
Meeting people, talking to people,
doing what needs to be done, they're looking for
the big, ah-ha.
We have a friend who is always looking
for that big real estate deal that
was gonna make him millions and he never found it
but he never did the work every day that was necessary
to where he could have been successful.
– [Robert] And he's broke.
– [Kim] He's broke today.
– [Robert] He's my age and broke.
So keep up the good work.
– [Kim] Yup.
– [Robert] The most important thing is,
like I wrote about in my book Fake,
it's the day I lost my engine over the ocean,
I went into the biggest calm, I've ever been in.
And most people would panic,
like you just saw that movie Sully about,
it's starring Tom Hanks.
He just got calm and if you can do that
life is going to be easy but if you can't do that
life is going to be f'd up.
Next question Melissa.
– [Melissa] Next question comes from Eddie
in El Paso, Texas.
Favorite book, Rich Dad Poor Dad.
Robert and Kim, how do you both handle failure?
(sighing) (giggling)
– [Robert] I don't think, I think success
is dependent on failure.
– [Kim] That is exactly what Mark says too.
– [Robert] Yeah, I mean, (stammering)
that's the reason I don't think people should go to school
because most school teachers are so afraid of failing
that's why they hang on to academics.
That's my poor Dad, I grew up in a family
of good people they just can't handle failure.
So my poor Dad, he lost his job he couldn't stand up.
He ran for Lieutenant Governor of the state of Hawaii
as Republican, which is not the brightest thing to do
in the Communist Republic of Hawaii.
But he ran for Lieutenant Governor, the Governor fired him,
and my father couldn't stand up, he had never failed.
He had been an A student all of his life.
So the better you can handle rejection,
the same for the question to the women in network marketing.
When I came out of the Marine Corp, I took a job
at Xerox knocking on doors.
And you had to knock on a thousand doors to get one sale.
That's a lot of knocking.
And it toughens you up, it makes you a better person,
stronger, more resilient.
Doesn't make you meaner, it makes you better,
you learn with each failure.
Every knock on the door was a failure but
that's the way I looked at it.
Any comments?
You did the same thing with your little
network marketing thing.
– [Kim] Yeah I was in network marketing for a little bit
and I learned more about business in a year and a half
then I did in four years of college.
But the biggest thing was this whole thing about mistakes
is that, a mistake just shows you something you didn't know.
It just shows you something you didn't know.
And everybody, every successful person
I have talked to, they talk about their mistakes
and somebody just the other day said,
I don't learn anything from my successes
but I learn a lot from all my mistakes and my failures.
And I think that's the key.
– [Robert] So right now, I'm looking at
starting a nother business and am I gonna fail?
Yes.
I look forward to it because that's how I'm going to learn.
(stammering) I must keep doing the same old thing,
that's good but that's not me.
So failure is how I learn.

– [Melissa] Our next question comes from Oscar
in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Favorite book, Unfair Advantage.
Says, I hear you an Kim talk about how
you feel that the coming economic crisis
is potentially upon us.
I'm curious as to how will our lives be affected
if the U.S. goes bankrupt?
– [Robert] It's going to be exciting.
– [Kim] (laughing) It's not going to be boring.
– [Robert] Well, look at what's happening
in Greece and Italy right now, you'll get an idea of it.
Look at what's happening in Venezuela, Cuba,
Zimbabwe and Japan, just look at those things
and you'll see how they're surviving.
Japan's doing okay, their debt to GDP is now 220 percent.
United States is only a hundred and seven percent
debt to GDP.
When I say that the average guy has no idea what
I'm even talking about because they don't study this stuff.
So what happens in an economy once it goes past
60 percent debt to GDP, if the government
doesn't make a correction it continues on,
when it passes 90 percent debt to GDP, it's irreversible.
So now under Trump, 'cause he gives
all these tax cuts to the rich (chuckling),
which I like, but anyway at a hundred and nine percent,
hundred and seven percent we can not turn around.
We are now going off the edge.
So you might as well prepare for it,
so that's why I wrote the book Fake.
The more you understand it, if you believe
CNBC and Fortune Magazine and Money Magazine
and those guys, you're listening to people
who actually profit from your ignorance and that's your
choice, that really is your choice but
I'd rather be prepared for the coming crash
then pretend it's not coming.
So I write about it in my book Fake,
we practice crashing every single day as Marine pilots,
every single day we had emergency procedures.
So when that baby, when my engine quit
off the coast of Vietnam, it was like
another day at the park.
You know, I just get calm and you go through the motions.
If you seen that movie about Sully, Sullenberger,
putting the U.S. Air into the Hudson River,
he was calm, that's the answer.
If you're prepared for it, it's a wonderful experience.
If you're not prepared for it, that's horrible.
Maybe that's what I have to say, read the book Fake,
look at it, you know fake money, fake teachers,
fake assets, cause they are all the same thing.
They are all the same problem, fake money, fake teachers,
fake assets, that's why there is
no financial education in school
and that's why the people that give you
the financial education, the people that
sell you the stocks, bonds, mutual funds and ETF's,
you're being lied to.

How TO Overcome PTSD || 4 effective Self Help Tips for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Living with PTSD is a continuous battle, especially if you’ve suffered from it for the most of your life. The scars left by a traumatic event, whether during your childhood or just recently can trigger your PTSD in ways unimaginable. And the fact that there’s no ultimate cure for this disease is equally terrifying. I’ve brought you these 4 Step-by-step guides that will help you overcome your PTSD.
#Step 1: Learn about PTSD:
The first step that you need to do is educate yourself about PTSD. You can GOOGLE it or you can take help from your doctor to find out everything; from its symptoms to its causes and diagnosis.
#Step 2: Manage your triggers:
People with PTSD are easily triggered by their surrounding such as places, voices or noises around them. So, it’s important that you learn to manage your triggers effectively. Once you experience the flashbacks or dissociation, practice deep and calm breathing. Do not close your eyes when you do this because closing your eyes might influence you to imagine the event, making your symptoms even worse.
Also, people with PTSD often lose touch with the reality as they relive their past over and over again. This is not only terrifying for you but it can also be scary for people around you. Learn grounding techniques to help you focus on your present. Start by touching the objects around you, describing them one by one. You can start by saying “I’m sitting on a white sofa, the fabric is really soft. The color of the carpet is blue and there’s a big vase in the corner.”
Or you can trick your mind by spelling the names of the animals or saying the numbers or alphabet backwards. Teach a friend or a family member about grounding and why you need to use it. If someone you trust understands when grounding is useful, they can remind you to use it and do it with you, if you are starting to lose touch with the present
#Step 3: Exercise and Adventure
Exercise not only boosts your physical health but it can improve your mood, decrease the stress hormones and help you get your life back together. Go for rhythmic exercises such as walking, swimming or dancing. Instead of focusing on your thoughts, focus on your body, the gestures and the movement. Notice how the air feels or how your feet hit the ground as you move. Not only this, you can also take up adventure sports like rock-climbing, scuba diving, mountain biking or rafting. Pursuing outdoor activities helps you take your mind off of negative thoughts, making you relaxed and serene.
#Step 4: Challenge your fears
Some adults with PTSD will find themselves avoiding situations that are associated with the trauma they experienced. For instance, If you were in a car accident, you might be avoiding driving or if it was cold during the event, you avoid anything that feels cold. The best way you can help yourself to deal with these fears is by facing them, rather than avoiding them. Approach these situations gradually. If you’ve been in a car accident, take the first step by just sitting inside your car. Listen to a soothing music. If you cannot do this alone then you can ask your loved one. The second step would be driving around your block. That way, you begin to take things normally and be able to overcome the fears that once haunted you. Challenging is kind of an exposure therapy and it’s very effective in overcoming your fears. All you need is practice and patience.
