Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) has demanded President Donald Trump take responsibility for the looming government shutdown, arguing any suggestion the Democratic Party should be held accountable is “bullshit.”
Speaking with Chris Hayes on MSNBC’s All In on Thursday night, the Hawaii lawmaker used her time to blast Trump on the shutdown, immigration and foreign policy.
Politicians in Washington have been working this week to arrange a short-term spending agreement to avoid a federal shutdown that would close a quarter of the government. They have until Friday evening to do so, but Trump has repeatedly said he will sign no deal that does not include funding for his controversial border wall proposal.
Indeed, Trump said Thursday he would not sign a bill passed by the Senate that would maintain funding until February because it did not include the $5 billion he wants for his wall. House Republicans passed an amended version of the bill late Thursday which does include wall funding, but it is unlikely to make it through the Senate.
“The Senate did the responsible thing last night by keeping government running and passing this bill by voice vote,” Hirono said. However, the senator suggested the president got “all worked up because he’s got some right-wing, loud people yelling at him on Fox News, and suddenly he says, ‘Well, I don’t think I’m going to sign it.’”
“It is very true that he will bring on the shutdown, and he has to take responsibility for it,” Hirono told Hayes. “Any effort on his part to blame the Democrats will be such bullshit that, as I said before, I would hardly be able to stand it.”
On Thursday, Trump argued the Democrats must change their tune and back his wall. “They want to try and do anything possible to hurt us because of the fact it’s politics,” the president said in a video posted to his Twitter account. “I understand that. I don’t even hold it against them. Except you should always put your country first. And they’re not doing that.”
Hirono has not shied away from foul language to vent her frustration over Republican politicking. During the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court confirmation fight in September, Hirono attacked Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) after he claimed to have done all he could to reach out to Kavanaugh accuser Christine Blasey Ford before she gave testimony in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee. “That is such bullshit I can hardly stand it,” Hirono told ABC.
The senator used her Thursday MSNBC appearance to take a wide swipe at Trump’s leadership, explaining “I feel as though we have been on a rollercoaster with him at the controls.”
Trump announced Wednesday that the U.S. would be withdrawing from Syria, falsely claiming that ISIS has been defeated. U.S. intelligence estimates suggest the terror group still has between 15,000 and 30,000 fighters in the area along the Syria-Iraq border.
Hirono suggested Trump “didn’t discuss it with anybody—including [Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis]—giving a huge Christmas present to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and to Iran.”
“Trump’s worldview is very—how should I say—out of whack,” the senator added. “He comes up with it himself.”
